Blancpain WatchesClick here to follow AskMen Fashion on Twitter. The Watch Snob is in.You may think you know watches, but let"s be real -- you just don Let me, a true horological aficionado, enlighten your plebeian minds as to what makes a real watch, what you should wear when and what to do with those old watches of yours. All the opinions expressed by the Watch Snob are my own and are just that -- opinions. Don worry, though. AskMen will still be bringing you great features on interesting watches to buy, both old and new, expensive and cheap. But for those who would like a truly discerning opinion on timepieces, short sweetheart wedding dresses let the Watch Snob decree.Hi Snob,I am looking for a classic good-looking watch that can take a beating and can be used for everything from diving to climbing chic cocktail dresses , or even sailing. I really like the look of the Blancpain 50 Fathoms as well as the Bremont Supermarine. I want a watch that is tough, great-looking and timeless. I would also like the watch to shut up my uncle who has a vast collection of Rolex watches that I think are nothing special.Contrary to the vast majority of pale, doughy men I see in most cities these days, noses buried in their smartphones, I receive a disproportionately high percentage of questions from self-described gentlemen adventurers who write that they are cliff-diving, parasailing and mountaineering, all while wooing beautiful women from Buenos Aires to Vladivostok. Something tells me there is some fantasizing afoot. But on to your question.Let compare the Bremont and the Blancpain. The former is a sturdily-made, handsome watch housing a gussied-up off-the-shelf movement from the House of Swatch and is absurdly overpriced. It is heavily marketed as a watch worn by (surprise!) gentlemen adventurers, as the British do best. The latter is a very shiny, oversized homage (in appearance only) to one of history best-known tool watches, made by Swatch in disguise. It is also fabulously overpriced. Admittedly, the Blancpain houses a very fine movement. But if you truly planning to bash your timepiece against granite cliffs and deck winches, do you really want to do it with a $10,000 one? Given the choice between the two for your purposes, I opt for the Bremont. When you drop it overboard or off of the Eiger, you only be out half as much as if it were the Blancpain. Now, if you really want to shut your uncle up, why not buy a tough, timeless (I leave the to the eye of the beholder) watch that has been through all the adventures you are fantasizing about and more: a Rolex.Mr. Snob,For my next watch (I"d like to spend $4,000) is it better to go with an unknown brand that has in-house movements, like NOMOS, or go for a known brand that uses ETA movements backless prom dresses 2012 ?I will almost always come down on the side of in-house movements, and your consideration of NOMOS watches is a worthy one. NOMOS is a fine brand, based in the birthplace of German watchmaking, Glash It is doing some wonderful things, particularly with its recent Z Weltzeit, wedding evening dresses which presents a useful world-time complication in a unique way. Granted, its styling is a bit stark and Bauhaus for my taste, but it still German, and it still in-house.Buy from companies that respect the watchmaking craft and legacy, and put the effort, time and investment into designing and building their own movements. In a small way, you are a caretaker for the history of this mechanical art in the same fashion an art patron encourages the creation of original art instead of buying a print.Question from a Watch KnobHello,I have heard from a well-placed person that Montblanc makes the works for Rolex. Is this true? I am saving money to buy a watch with a lot of history behind it and was thinking the Rolex Datejust would be the one until I heard about the Montblanc connection.I believe your well-placed friend is also an ill-informed one. The only thing Montblanc makes for Rolex are the pens that mysteriously bleed ink all over the chest pockets of the executive team.
