To the one guy who responded to my comment seriously (I'm the guy who posted that long-ass thing that people have been reposting): I think skate-theory is the sickest thing. Every time I think about what skateboarding means on a grand scale I'm just so stoked that I get to be a part of it. Although it kinda sucks because what's so cool about skateboarding is how it's so unaffected by any kind of philosophy (although there's actually a lot to be examined here), which sucks because that means there's not much to intellectualize. These people think skill is cool (is it not?) and so they think this trick is cool. They do not care about the cultural implications of this trick, what it means to skateboarding as a whole. This indifference could stem from two places: either from ignorance of (or naïve participation in) current cultural trends, or from a purposeful rejection of cultural trends as unimportant. Others think that this kind of tre flip represents a malignant recent trend in skateboarding, one that is more concerned with stylish flippery than with speed and pop, two attributes which these people esteem more highly than deft footwork and “skill”. There are various reasons for this, but even without these reasons we can safely understand that this is the case. The third view, which might be called the “synthesis” (I’m a college nerd and study Hegel), is that which regards these kinds of considerations as unimportant and “anti-skateboarding,” and which appreciates Gustavo’s tre flip because he is contributing to skateboarding in a way that these stupid online commenters are not. These are probably the people who don’t comment, but just watch this video, get stoked, and go outside to skate. Interestingly though, people who hold this view often fall into the category of people who “purposefully reject cultural trends as unimportant,” which groups them with the most ignorant set (those who blindly accept culture).
